PROVO -- A man was booked into jail on 200 counts of sexual exploitation of a minor after Utah County Sheriff's deputies reported that they found at least hundreds of child pornography files on his computer.
Jeffrey Tolman, 40, of Provo was arrested Tuesday by sheriff's deputies. According to a police affidavit, he had been the subject of an undercover investigation and began downloading child pornography on or around May 10. The affidavit states that police served a search warrant at his home, and that Tolman admitted to downloading the images.
Tolman allegedly downloaded 785 images of known child pornography. Authorities also report that more than 2,000 images appeared to depict prepubescent children engaged in sexual activity, but that those images were not already known to be child pornography. Some of those images included titles indicating that they included child pornography, the affidavit states. All of the images were identified using a "pre-scan" of Tolman's computer, and authorities reportedly plan to conduct a more thorough forensic scan in the future.
Utah County Sheriff's Lt. Mike Brower said that officials currently are evaluating the case to determine if it should be prosecuted in federal court. Brower said authorities will evaluate the severity of the crime and Tolman's criminal history as they make a decision.
Unlike the wave of arrests that occurred in April as part of the state-wide Frosty Lime Squeeze sting, Brower said that Tolman was apprehended as part of the sheriff's ongoing efforts to capture child pornography perpetrators. Tolman's bail was set at $10,000.
